Getting Engaged
Being part of a church community means getting engaged with the life of the church. As I see it, there are four basic ways to be engaged in the life of Centre UMC: attending worship regularly; being discipled through participation in a Sunday School class, Bible study, or small group; discipling others by leading small groups, Sunday School classes, Bible studies, and other opportunities; and serving in a variety of ways, from being on a church committee to setting up or cleaning up after meals.
Some of us are fully engaged at Centre, attending worship, being discipled, discipling others, and serving in some capacity. Many of us, though, have gaps. Maybe we attend worship frequently, but that’s it. Or maybe we attend worship and serve on a committee, but we don’t actively disciple others.
As your pastor, one of my most important jobs is to find ways for you to become more engaged in the life of our congregation. So I’m writing this column as an invitation: what can we do together so that you get more engaged here at Centre? What would it take for you to add just one more point of engagement?
One of my personal goals for the rest of the year is to offer new ways for people who have gaps in their engagement to become more engaged. But I need to hear from you about when something works, when it doesn’t, and why. I need to hear from you about what has held you back in the past, so that we can clear those obstacles out of your path in the future. Talk to me. Tell me how you can be more engaged at Centre!
One more thing: if in the bulletin, or the newsletter, or in the announcements at the end of a worship service you hear an invitation to become more engaged in one way or another, don’t sit there wondering if the invitation is for you. It is! You are invited to get engaged with life here in Jesus Christ. I hope you’ll respond.

In Brief…
*Youth group is at Jarrettsville this month.
*The Spring Tea is May 21.
*The United Methodist Church’s General Conference begins meeting May 10. Please be in prayer for the Conference, which makes major decisions impacting the life of all congregations.
*Our next Fifth Sundays event is May 29. We will have a special youth-adult Sunday School at 11:00 led by Pastor Mark and a potluck lunch in the fellowship hall at Noon.
*The June newsletter deadline is May 26.

Psalm 67: This month Pastor Mark is challenging us to memorize as much of Psalm 67 as we can. Here is the New Revised Standard Version translation:
May God be gracious to us and bless us and make his face to shine upon us,
that your way may be known upon earth, your saving power among all nations.

Youth group lock-in is from Saturday, May 7, through Sunday, May 8, at Jarrettsville UMC. The youth will be assisting with Jarrettsville’s spring festival during the day of May 7 and spend the night at Jarrettsville UMC that night. They will attend worship together at the church Sunday morning. Please talk to Pastor Mark or Nicky Barthel for more details.
The Spring Tea is Saturday, May 21, 1:00-3:00 p.m. Tickets are $15. If you are interested in hostessing a table or serving, please speak with Kathy Johnson.
May Fifth Sundays Series: Our Fifth Sundays Series will continue on May 29. Youth and adults will join Pastor Mark at 11:00 for a combined Sunday School class called “Why I Am a United Methodist.” Pastor Mark will combine details of his own faith journey with information about the history and teachings of the Methodist tradition. He will also offer some thoughts on what it means to do church the Methodist way, with some suggestions for how we can use insights from our history and teaching to grow as a congregation at Centre. Following Sunday School we will gather in the Fellowship Hall for a potluck lunch. Please be sure to come out for this Fifth Sundays Event!
From Judy Potts: Hi I just wanted to thank the “crew” of Reed Blom, Cathy, Dean & Grant Trimble for providing the meal and packing lunches this past April 7, 2016. The next time we serve will be Tues. June 7, and that month the youth will be serving along with their leaders. You will have the opportunity to serve in Aug., Oct., and Dec. The sign-up sheet will return. We need some NEW faces folks. Also, heartfelt “Thank You” for all the folks who contributed to our collection of gift cards to fill a basket for the Welcome One Basket Bingo fundraiser held on April 1 and specially to Lynn Blom for taking care of the details. The total was $80 and it also included 2 free hair cuts provided by Great Clips. Finally, we received a “thank you” as a congregation for our support of Samaritan’s Purse Operation Christmas Child (shoeboxes). Overall 8,765,637 shoeboxes were collected in the U.S. and 11,213,010 worldwide. Now hopefully this year we can participate once again. Of course
you know you have my “thanks” for your support also.
Centre’s Finances
Changes in Reporting: This year we are only reporting undirected giving, rather than total giving. While Centre is grateful for and needs all offerings that come in, in most cases only undirected giving may be used for the day-to-day expenses of the congregation. Directed giving allows our church to pursue special projects or fund one-time expenses. Undirected giving pays the light bill and gets the bathrooms cleaned.
Also, the totals show receipts, the budget, and the amount ahead/behind up to the week when the newsletter is published. Through April 17, therefore, Centre’s giving is $3,164.64 less than what has been budgeted for the same time.
