The food pantry needs: Pasta sauce, baked beans, syrup, canned fruit, canned pasta, and macaroni and cheese.

The North Harford UM Men will meet at 7am on Saturday, March 12, for breakfast, devotions, and a service project. The meeting will take place at Darlington UMC. The North Harford UM Men is a new initiative aimed at bringing men from our North Harford churches together.

Judy Potts is considering putting together a basket from Centre for the Welcome One Shelter’s Annual Basket Bingo. If you are interested, please speak with her.

Also, Judy has information about Compassion International, a Christian charity that helps needy children and families around the world. If you would like to know more about Compassion or would like to sponsor a child, please speak with her.

One Great Hour of Sharing is this Sunday, March 6 Everything given in the offering plates by the communion rail will go toward the work of United Methodists serving those in disaster-stricken areas all over the world. If you are able, please consider giving the equivalent of one week of your regular tithe to this effort in addition to your regular gift to Centre. But whatever you give will go directly to helping those in great need. Checks may be made our to Centre UMC, with “UMCOR” or “One Great Hour of Sharing” in the “For” line.

Invitation

In the Congregational Study survey from last summer, many of you reported that you had invited a friend, family member, or colleague to Centre in the last year. What a wonderful thing, that you believe the ministries of this congregation are worth sharing with other people!

As we approach Holy Week, I want to extend two invitations to you. First, I invite you to attend a service you’ve never been to before. Maybe you’ve never come for a Maundy Thursday or Good Friday service. Maybe you’ve never been up to Rocks for the Sunrise Service on Easter Sunday. Come out to one (or all!) of these this year. Make it a priority to attend one of these services. You are invited.

Second, I invite you to make a special effort to invite someone new to Centre for Palm Sunday and/or Easter Sunday. Invite someone from your family or work or your neighborhood. Don’t just invite them to “come to church sometime.” Say, “You know, we’re having a real special worship service on March 20; it’d be great if you could come see our youth lead part of the service.” (Our youth do have an important role in the Palm Sunday service). Or say, “Easter is a great day at Centre; maybe you could come just this once.”

Stuck on who to invite? Start with the person you think is least likely to say yes, the person who, in your mind, would never come. When I was in college leading a Bible study, I sat outside the school dining hall at a table to recruit new members with my girlfriend (now wife!) Libby. A guy from our dorm walked by, and I knew not to even bother with him. There was no way he’d join my group! But Libby called out to him anyway. He came over, we chatted, and he said yes. Over the next two years he became the most faithful member of the Bible studies I led.

God is doing great things at Centre; why hide them under a bushel?

I hope all of us will invite someone to worship with us this Palm Sunday or Easter. Who knows: the person you invite may become our most faithful member.

In Brief…

*Youth group is at Jarrettsville this month.

Psalm 54: This month Pastor Mark is challenging us to memorize as much of Psalm 5 as we can. Here is the New Revised Standard Version translation:

Save me, O God, by your name, and vindicate me by your might.

Hear my prayer, O God; give ear to the words of my mouth.

For the insolent have risen against me, the ruthless seek my life; they do not set God before them.

But surely, God is my helper; the Lord is the upholder of my life.

He will repay my enemies for their evil. In your faithfulness, put an end to them.

With a freewill offering I will sacrifice to you; I will give thanks to your name, O Lord, for it is good.

For he has delivered me from every trouble, and my eye has looked in triumph on my enemies.

Holy Week: Palms Sunday is March 20. We will meet in our Gathering Space to process in with palms at the beginning of our worship service. Maundy Thursday, which marks Jesus’ last evening with his disciples, is March 24, and we will worship together at 7pm. Good Friday, the day of our Lord’s crucifixion, we will have a service at noon and again at 7pm. And on Easter Sunday we will meet at the top of Rocks State Park at 6:30am and at Centre at 9:30 to celebrate Christ’s resurrection. Please take advantage of these opportunities to receive the grace of walking with Christ through his week of suffering, death, and triumph.

A number of churches in our area have come together to form a North Harford United Methodist Men’s group. This group has invited the men of Centre to join them on the morning of March 12 for breakfast, devotions, and a potato drop. After breakfast, a truck will drop off 2 tons of potatoes which will then be distributed to area ministries that can use the food for those in need. If you are interested in joining this effort, please speak with Pastor Mark.

Tomorrow, February 19, at 7:00 p.m. there will be a discussion of Islam and Christianity at Mt. Tabor UMC on Route 1. Ahemed Attia, a former Muslim who attends Mt. Tabor, will discuss his own experiences and answer questions.

One Great Hour of Sharing is March 6, two weeks from now. On this special Sunday all United Methodists collect an offering that goes toward relief work done by the United Methodist Church all over the world. Please plan ahead now to give generously!

Youth parents are asked to meet with Pastor Mark and Nicky Barthel during the Sunday School hour this week for a mid-year check-in.

This year as a congregation our Lenten focus will be on the practice of prayer. Beginning February 17, Pastor Mark will offer a Lenten Study Series on prayer. Richard Foster’s book Prayer will guide us. If you would like a copy, please let Pastor Mark know by this Sunday, February 14.

Serving Communion is a great way to help lead worship at Centre. When would you like to serve? Talk to Nancy Martin this Sunday!
