Announcements

As always be sure to check the online calendar for upcoming events. You can also read past sermons or watch videos from previous Sundays on our website.

Please bring Christmas gift tree items this Sunday.

Please remember the food pantry this week in your grocery shopping.  The pantry needs: sauce, rice, canned fruit, jelly, canned pasta, mashed potato mix and gravy.

Christmas Eve services will be at 7:00PM and 11:00PM.  Please invite a friend to celebrate Christ’s birth with us.  

Reminder:  On Christmas day and New Years day our worship service will be at 10:30 AM.  Will will not have Sunday school on those days.

Every other month Centre provides a meal for the Welcome One homeless shelter in Edgewood. December 7 is our next serving date, and we could use some extra help this time! If you would be willing to help prepare dinner at the shelter, please contact Judy Potts, or speak with her or Robin Winternitz after worship this Sunday.

Our Christmas gift tree will have tags this Sunday. Please take a tag and return all items by December 18.

Advent Longing

Advent, the first season of the church year, is the four Sundays before Christmas Day. Traditionally, Advent is seen as a time of waiting and preparation for Christ’s coming. Now, when Christmas creeps earlier and earlier in the year as a consumer holiday, it is so important that we reserve time to prepare and not rush into the Christmas celebration.

But Advent is about more than waiting. It is about longing for something more. We all have wants and desires. Sometimes we think we know what will satisfy our longings. Sometimes we’re right, but often we turn to things that satisfy us in the short term, but in the long run always leave us wanting something else. And sometimes we don’t have a clue how to satisfy our desires.

Advent is a season for us to long again for Jesus. Our readings this year, especially from the Old Testament book of Isaiah, touch on things we all want: peace, comfort, safety, productive and happy lives, reassurance in the face of strange or scary events, and so on. And the readings build on each other each Sunday in Advent, so that we begin to train our desires on Jesus, who alone can satisfy our deepest longings.

I invite you not to rush too quickly to Christmas celebrations this year. If you do, you may end up substituting the cheer and excitement of the holiday season for the deep hope and joy of longing for Jesus Christ. One of my friends says that Advent is her favorite season of the year, because it doesn’t force her to be too happy too quickly. I think there’s something very powerful in that idea.

When we long for Jesus, we don’t ignore the world for what it is now. All of us know sadness; all of us miss friends and loved ones who are no longer alive with us; all of us have worries about our future. We don’t turn away from these things. But we don’t give up either. We don’t despair. We hope for something more, something greater, the satisfaction of the day when Christ will truly be all in all.

Don’t just wait for Jesus this Advent season. Long for him. Desire him. Hope in him as you prepare to celebrate his birth, and to welcome his return.

*The January newsletter deadline is December 22.

*Youth group meets at Jarrettsville this month. No meeting on Christmas Day. On December 4, we will meet from 12:30-7:30pm for our cookie-baking at Jarrettsville. Lunch and dinner will be provided.

*Youth group Christmas Party is December 18 at Nicky and Clayton Barthel’s home.

*Christmas Eve services will be at 7:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m.

*Christmas Day we will worship at 10:30 a.m.

*Youth should remember to bring their summer mission trip commitment forms to youth group on December 4.


Announcements

Pastor Mark will offer another short-term Sunday School class, Portraits of Jesus, for the four Sundays of Advent (November 27, December 4, December 11, and December 18). Each week we will study a different gospel portrait of Jesus: Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. All are invited to this class, which will meet in the basement fellowship hall.

The Christmas Tea is the afternoon of December 3. Proceeds from the tea will benefit the Emergency Rotating Shelter Centre is hosting in February.

Gift tags for our Christmas gift collection will be available this month in the sanctuary. Please purchase gifts and bring them to the church by December 18, wrapped and clearly labeled.

The next meeting for the Emergency Rotating Homeless Shelter will be Thursday, December 8, at 7:00 p.m.

All new and returning church leaders (Church Council, Trustees, SPRC/LLDC, and Finance Committees) should plan to attend the Leadership Retreat on January 7, from 9:00 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. Pastor Mark will lead this retreat, which will focus on long-range planning for Centre.

With flu season now in full swing, please make sure you are taking precautions if you are sick or if your immune system is weakened. If you have not yet gotten a flu shot, please consider doing so, if your physician says you are healthy enough to do so.

The youth group is going on a mission trip this summer. Please mark your calendar for our first fundraiser, a spaghetti supper, on January 22 at 6:00 p.m. at Centre.

Christmas Eve at Centre will be celebrated at 7:00 and 11:00 p.m; the later service will include Holy Communion. Offerings from Christmas Eve will go to the Welcome One Homeless Shelter in Edgewood. On Christmas Day we will worship at 10:30 a.m., with no Sunday School that morning.

A note from the Armstrong family: “Thank you for all your prayers, support, and help after Joan Armstrong’s passing. We are especially grateful for the beautiful flowers you sent in memory of Joan, and for the wonderful luncheon that you provided after the interment… Your kind gestures and generosity have touched us deeply during this difficult time.”

Announcements

As always be sure to check the online calendar for upcoming events. You can also read past sermons or watch videos from previous Sundays on our website.

There will be a Thanksgiving Eve service at Salem Lutheran Church in Jarrettsville on tonight at 7:00 PM.  Pastor Mark is the preacher for the service, which joins Methodist, Lutheran, and Presbyterian churches.

There is no youth group this Sunday. Youth should remember their mission trip commitment forms, which are due December 4.

Poinsettias orders can be made this coming Sunday to decorate the sanctuary for Christmas. The flowers are available in red, white, or marble colors, and 4 ½ inch or 6 ½ pots.

If you would like to lead one of our Advent wreath lightings in December, please contact Pastor Mark as soon as possible.

We will decorate the sanctuary this Saturday starting at 9:00 a.m. Please come out to help and to enjoy a time of fellowship.

Thank you to everyone who provided a basket for our Thanksgiving collection. Because of you, 20 families will have food on the table for this holiday celebration.
