The Ministry of All Christians

As United Methodists, one of the things we believe is that all Christians are called to be ministers. There are different ways of living out that calling; not everyone is called to be a pastor. But all of us are called to Christian ministry.

Last month, those of you who helped host the emergency rotating served as Christ’s ministers shelter by your prayers, your presence, your gifts, your service, and your witness. Rough estimates are that we welcomed an average of 30 women and men per night over 14 nights. That’s 420 bed nights, or $21,000 of hotel room expenses, you provided, in addition to meals and the gifts of compassionate friendship you offered. Well done, all of you!

As I go on paternity leave this month, I want to remind you that Christian ministry is not just about special projects like the shelter. In my absence there will be many opportunities for you to serve as ministers. Some of these will be formal, public ways, like reading Scripture in worship services. Others will be quieter, like visiting those who cannot come to Centre because of illness or infirmity. Still others will be nearly invisible, like cleaning the sanctuary or making sure the lights are off and the doors closed.

I hope and trust you will continue to serve as faithfully and with as much love as you demonstrated in the last two weeks of February. I will miss you while I’m gone, but I look forward to hearing about the great things God will continue to do in your midst over the next several months.

*Youth group meets at Centre this month. On March 19 the youth will host another fundraiser, a Cake Auction, at Centre in the evening. Dinner will be provided at 5:00, followed by the auction at 6:00.

Cake Auction: The youth will host a second fundraiser for their summer mission trip to Philadelphia on March 19. Dinner will be served at 5:00 p.m. and will be followed by an auction of cakes made by members of the churches that sponsor our youth group. Please come out to support the youth.

We would like Centre to provide 10 cakes for the auction. If you can donate a cake for the auction, please speak with Pastor Mark or Nicky Barthel.

Holy Waters is a Lenten worship series Centre is joining along with other congregations in North Harford. At least ten congregations are involved. Each Wednesday from March 8-April 5 we will gather for a light supper at 6:00 p.m., followed by worship at 6:45. Each week a different speaker will talk about a passage from Scripture in which water plays a prominent role. The series is hosted by Bethel Presbyterian Church on Norrisville Road in White Hall. Please take advantage of this weekly Lenten practice!

The Welcome One Shelter is holding its annual Basket Bingo at St. Margaret’s church in Bel Air on April 21. If you would be interested in contributing to a basket from Centre, please speak with Beverly Helmick this week.

Centre’s Finances: Through the first 2 months of 2017, giving is down by over $6,000, compared to our budget. Thankfully, actual expenses have also been lower than expected, but, financially, Centre is off to a difficult start to the new year. Thank you to everyone who has contributed this year so far. Every gift matters. If you have questions about Centre’s finances, please speak with John Griffin.

Lent and Easter 2017 at Centre

Each year at Centre we add events or classes to our calendar to focus our attention on Christ’s Passion, Death, and Resurrection. This year we are expanding our practice of Lent by working with nine other churches from North Harford County. Please mark your calendars now and plan to participate in these events:

“Holy Water”: A weekly gathering at Bethel Presbyterian Church, 4135 Norrisville Road, White Hall. On Wednesdays in Lent we will meet at 6:00 p.m. for a light supper, followed by a brief service of Scripture, prayer, and hymns at 6:45 p.m. Each week a different pastor will speak on a biblical passage in which water plays a major role. We will meet March 8, 15, 22, 29, and April 5. Pastor Mark will speak on April 5.

Holy Week: We will have worship services at 7:00 p.m on Maundy Thursday, April 13; and Noon and 7:00 p.m. on Good Friday, April 14.

Easter: 6:30 a.m. (at Rocks State Park) and 9:30 a.m. (at Centre) on Easter Sunday, April 16.

Cake Auction to Support Youth Missions: Next Sunday, March 19, at Centre there will be a baked potato dinner at 5:00 followed by an auction (with a real auctioneer!) of cakes at 6:00 to support our youth group’s summer mission trip. Please come out to support our youth!

Calling all bakers: Would you be willing to donate a cake for the youth group cake auction next Sunday? All cakes are welcome! If you can donate a cake, please bring it to church next Sunday by 5:00 p.m.

Youth meals: The youth group meets at Centre on March 12, 26, and for the month of May. If you could provide a simple meal for the youth any of those Sundays, please speak with Nicky or Clayton Barthel.

Pastor Mark begins his paternity leave on Monday, March 13. He will be on leave until June 11 but will be back to preach beginning May 14. Each week a list of area pastors will be published in the bulletin if you need pastoral care.
