Please remember the Food Pantry in your grocery shopping this week. This week the pantry needs canned tuna, mustard, ketchup, baked beans, macaroni and cheese, and canned fruit.

Cooks are needed for February 7 to prepare supper at the Welcome One Shelter. Please contact Judy Potts in order to assist in this effort.

On Sunday, January 22, the youth group will host a spaghetti supper at Centre to raise money for their summer mission trip to Philadelphia. Dinner will be served at 6:00 p.m., the cost is only $5, and the youth ask that you make a generous contribution to their trip in return for a great dinner.

The next planning meeting for the Emergency Rotating Shelter is tonight, 1/5, at 7:00 p.m. in the fellowship hall.

Reminder:  this weekend we return to our regular service schedule, with worship at 9:30 followed by Sunday School at 11:00 a.m.

The Leadership Retreat is this Saturday from 9:00 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. All congregational leaders are encouraged to attend. Lunch will be provided.

“You Have Heard…”

The Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5-7) contains some of Jesus’s most famous, and most important, teaching about the life of discipleship and the kingdom of God. Many people are most familiar with the Beatitudes, the short, memorable blessings at the beginning of the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5:3-12), but the Beatitudes are just that: the beginning of the Sermon, and not, by far, the whole thing. They introduce the down-is-up way of Jesus Christ. What we usually think of as things that make for unhappiness are the very things that lead us to beatitude (true happiness). This pattern continues throughout the Sermon on the Mount. One of Jesus’s repeated phrases is, “You have heard.” Five times in Matthew 5 Jesus says, “You have heard…” and then upends whatever has been heard in the past.

This January and February I will be preaching a 6-part series on the Sermon on the Mount. I’m calling the series “You Have Heard…” There are things we have heard, at church, at work, on television, and many other places, but not all of them lead us in the way of Jesus Christ. Two thousand years later, the Sermon on the Mount challenges what we have heard just as much as it challenged Jesus’s first audience.

-Have you heard, “God wants you to be rich”? Jesus says, “Blessed are the poor in spirit.”

-Have you heard, “Don’t worry; be happy”? Jesus says, “Blessed are those who mourn.”

-Have you heard, “Lean in”? Jesus says, “Blessed are the meek.”

-Have you heard, “Be satisfied with what you have”? Jesus says, “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness.

-Have you heard, “Don’t show weakness”? Jesus says, “Blessed are the merciful.”

-Have you heard, “You can’t make an omelet without breaking a few eggs”? Jesus says, “Blessed are the pure in heart.”

As we listen together to the Sermon on the Mount this month and next, I invite you to read Matthew 5-7 as part of your devotional time. The more we receive this blessed word from the Lord, the more our lives will be blessed, and the more God’s kingdom will be made known in this world.

In Brief…

*The February newsletter deadline is January 19.

*Youth group meets at Centre this month. No meeting on New Year’s Day. On January 15 we will have our first Spaghetti Supper fundraiser for our summer mission trip.

*The congregational Leadership Retreat is January 7 from 9:00 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. All congregational leaders are encouraged to attend.

*On New Year’s Day we will worship at 10:30 a.m.

*Mark your calendars now for March 5, the first Sunday in Lent, when we will have our next Community Worship Service. The service will take place at Centre.


Announcements

Paternity Leave: With the arrival of Christopher Gorman, Pastor Mark will be going on paternity leave for 13 weeks beginning March 13. For the first 8 weeks Rev. Dr. Paul Benjamin will preach and celebrate communion; for the last 5 weeks, Pastor Mark will be present on Sunday mornings but unavailable during the week. Pastoral care coverage will be provided by a network of area pastors. Please plan to attend a congregational meeting during the Sunday School hour on January 29 for more information about Pastor Mark’s leave.

Emergency Rotating Homeless Shelter: Centre’s turn to host the shelter is just around the corner: February 20-27. This is a congregation-wide effort. Please set aside time in your schedule that week to help prepare a meal, to clean the church, or to spend time with the men and women we will be hosting. If you cannot help on-site, please pray daily for this effort and encourage others to participate according to their gifts and abilities.

The next meeting for the Emergency Rotating Homeless Shelter will be Thursday, January 5, at 7:00 p.m.

All new and returning church leaders (Church Council, Trustees, SPRC/LLDC, and Finance Committees) should plan to attend the Leadership Retreat on January 7, from 9:00 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. Pastor Mark will lead this retreat, which will focus on long-range planning for Centre. Lunch is provided.

With flu season now in full swing, please make sure you are taking precautions if you are sick or if your immune system is weakened. If you have not yet gotten a flu shot, please consider doing so, if your physician says you are healthy enough to do so.

The youth group is going on a mission trip this summer. Please mark your calendar for our first fundraiser, a spaghetti supper, on January 22 at 6:00 p.m. at Centre.

Congregational Goals for 2017: The SPRC has set the following goals for our congregation for the new year: (1) Encourage individuals to build upon newly formed relationships in the broader faith communities of Northern Harford County by supporting the youth group in their mission and ministry efforts. (2) Improve communications within the community, both our church community and the broader faith and secular communities at large by actively seeking opportunities to engage and serve alongside the community in mission and ministry. (3) Explore new ways to become more active in helping the poor and homeless in our communities through God Provides Food Pantry, Welcome On Emergency Shelter, and the Harford Family House. Successfully host Emergency Rotating Homeless Shelter. (4) Work to develop long-term vision and ministry goals.

Announcements

As always be sure to check the online calendar for upcoming events. You can also read past sermons or watch videos from previous Sundays on our website.

Christmas Eve services will be at 7:00PM and 11:00PM. Please invite a friend to celebrate Christ’s birth with us.  

Reminder:  On Christmas day and New Years day our worship service will be at 10:30 AM.  Will will not have Sunday school on those days.

This week, the Food Pantry needs: boxed mashed potatoes, canned fruit, jelly, canned pasta, and macaroni and cheese.
