** GOAL!!!

Last month Centre’s Staff-Parish Relations Committee (SPRC) met to set 2015 goals for the pastor and the congregation. Setting goals in a church can feel a little odd: shouldn’t we just be following Jesus? Of course, but goals can (they don’t always) help us focus on how discipleship now might be different than it was five years ago or than it will be in another few years.
Discipleship can also often be exhausting, and goals can help us avoid burnout. When we’ve completed a goal, it’s a good opportunity to take some Sabbath rest from the work involved in reaching the goal. And we can then turn our attention and resources to different areas.
In order to set the goals for 2015, the SPRC drew on recommendations from me, discussions at the January leadership retreat, and ideas and discussions from the SPRC members themselves. Here’s what they decided for us.
For the congregation, the SPRC set four goals: 1)Continue to build upon and improve communication internally and externally to the broader community at large; 2)Increase awareness through our witness and transparency in regards to addiction; 3)Be more proactive in welcoming new members, visitors and the communities we serve into the Body of Christ at Centre; 4)Use the 150^th Anniversary Celebration to increase community outreach and promote faithful stewardship.
For the pastor, there are three goals: 1)Proactively assist members of the congregation in the discernment of gifts and graces; 2)Develop and improve Lay Leadership Development Committee Training and Formation; 3)Continue to evaluate and develop Sunday service accessibility for members of the community with special needs.
You will be hearing more about these goals over the next nine months. And, if you have thoughts about implementing them, be sure to say something to one of our church leaders.

In Brief…

* March 29^th is Palm Sunday. It is also our Fifth Sunday Christian Education day and the day of our fifth Sunday potluck.
* The Lenten Worship and Study series will meets each Wednesday this month at 7 pm in the Community Building.

Announcements
Monthly Prayer: Please make Centre’s monthly prayer part of your daily devotional time. This month, you are asked to pray for the clients of the Food Pantry. The winter has been harsh, making life even more difficult for many of them. Pray especially for new clients who are adjusting to needing food help, maybe for the first time in their lives.
Our Fifth Sundays Series continues on March 29. Pastor Mark will lead a combined youth/adult Sunday School class at 11:00 in the sanctuary. If you don’t regularly attend Sunday School or one of our small groups, this is a great opportunity to enrich your faith. This month’s topic will be Creed(s). We will discuss what a creed is and why we use creeds in worship. There will also be time for questions about the meaning of the creeds we use at Centre, the Apostles’ Creed and the Nicene Creed.
Also on March 29, we will have a potluck lunch after Sunday School. During the lunch Pastor Mark offer brief reflections on the last year at Centre and on hopes for the upcoming months of this year.
Youth group will meet on the March 1 and March 15. On March 1we will travel to Jarrettsville UMC for a meeting from 6-8pm. Meet at the church at 5:45 for a ride (let Pastor Mark or Nicky Barthel know if you need a ride) or 6:00 at Jarrettsville UMC. On March 15 we will meet at Centre from 5:00-6:30pm and host Jarrettsville’s youth group.
Please remember to make the Food Pantry part of your weekly grocery shopping. Adding just a can or two each week to your trip takes very little on your part and helps sustain the pantry’s efforts from week to week. Regularly needed items include canned fruit, jelly, beans, baked beans, and cereal.
Scripture readers and Communion servers are needed each Sunday. If you would like to be a communion server, please contact Nancy Martin. If you are interested in reading Scripture, please contact Pastor Mark.
There is a signup sheet for the Flower Chart at the back of the sanctuary. Please consider giving flowers in honor or memory of a loved one.
The April Newsletter Deadline is March 26.
