CentreNews Rev. Mark Gorman, Pastor

Thank You

I want to begin 2016 with a note of gratitude. I’m not always very good with thank-you notes, and there’s no way I can make up for all the thank-you’s I ought to have said in 2015. But I do hope to get 2016 off with a better start.

If you served on the Church Council, SPRC, Trustees, LLDC, or Finance Committee in 2015: thank you. Thank you for giving generously of your time, energy, and ideas. Thank you for attending meetings and contributing. Thank you for taking on difficult tasks.

If you were a Sunday School teacher or helped with the youth group last year: thank you. Thank you for helping the church remember that we are to serve God with our minds. Thank you, especially, if you worked with children and youth.

If you served Communion, read Scripture, played music, and set up the sanctuary for, or cleaned up after, our worship services: thank you. Worship is what the church must be about. Thank you for helping us keep worship at the heart of Centre’s life together.

If you helped with the church grounds, cleaning, raking, clearing snow, fixing, or improving our facilities at the church campus or at the parsonage: thank you. Thank you for saving the church money. Thank you for caring for things that need our attention. Thank you for keeping my family housed, safely and comfortably.

If you gave financially this year: thank you. Thank you for seeing giving as part of your discipleship journey. Thank you for sustaining ministries like the God Provides Food Pantry and the Pastor’s Discretionary Fund.

Finally, thank you to the whole congregation for the generous Christmas present you gave me this past week. I am blessed to serve a loving church. And I am thankful to God for having such a great debt of gratitude to repay to you.

Yours in Christ,

Pastor Mark

Announcements

Psalm 100: This month Pastor Mark is challenging us to memorize as much of Psalm 133 as we can. Here is the New Revised Standard Version translation:

How very good it is when kindred dwell together in unity!

It is like the precious oil on the head, running down upon the bead,

on the beard of Aaron,

running down over the collar of his robe.

It is like the dew of Hermon, which falls on the mountains of Zion.

For there the Lord ordained his blessing,

life forevermore.

New sermon series: Did you know God is on a mission? And that we’re all invited to be a part of it? Starting January 10, Pastor Mark will preach a 4-week series on Our Mission and the Mission of God. Come hear how God is calling Centre to be in mission in 2016.

2016 Goals: The Staff-Parish Relations Committee (SPRC) has established three goals for the entire congregation for the year 2016:

1) Encourage individuals to become self-propelled in building new and improving old communications within the community, both within our own church community and with the broader community at large.

2) Explore new ways to become proactive in regards to helping those affected by addictions in our community, both within and in the broader community at large, by our prayers, our presence, our gifts, our service, and our witness.

3) Take an active role in welcoming and nurturing our new members and visitors into our church community and help them on their journey of becoming disciples in the Lord.

What can you do this year to help realize these goals? One thing you can do is talk to church leaders (see below for the 2016 leadership roster). Ask them from time to time about how we are making progress on them. Make suggestions if ideas occur to you about how to meet them better. The goals are for everyone!

Pastoral Goals for 2016:
The SPRC and Pastor Mark have also agreed to goals for the pastor:
* Proactively assist members of the congregation with discernment of gifts and graces in order to assist them to become better disciples by ways of guidance in stewardship and mission work.
* Take an active approach to sharing personal experiences and encourage congregation to do the same in regards to how God has led you over the years in your spiritual journey and things you have experienced in regards to His faith and love.
* Explore new ways we can connect with the communities that meet on our campus, with families that attend Forest Hill Elementary School, and our surrounding neighborhoods.
* Make missions more of a congregational focus for 2016
* Follow up on the Congregational Study presented in November 2015.

Pastor Mark has already designated specific activities to meet these goals; if you would like to know what he’s planning, feel free to contact him.
