Dear Centre Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

Although many of you attended the June 18 congregation meeting, many of you also were unable to be present. I write this letter to you as a follow-up to that meeting: to inform those not present of what was announced and to put in writing a response to some of the questions that were asked.

On July 1, 2017, Centre’s appointment status will change from full-time to half-time for the appointment year of July 1, 2017-June 30, 2018. I will remain as your pastor for the next year (at least), but in a part-time capacity.

This decision was made by the Staff-Parish Relations Committee (SPRC) after I recommended it, and our District Superintendent and Bishop have both approved the change. The financial pressures on Centre this year have been significant and unexpected. Centre has issues with expenses, not with giving, which overall is very generous. In particular, roughly 52% of Centre’s budget (before the change to half-time) goes to direct pastoral expenses: salary, health insurance, and retirement benefits. Going half-time allows Centre to save about $32,000 over the next year in expenses.

The SPRC hopes that our Bishop and District Superintendent will be able to find another congregation, or set of congregations, which can be brought together with Centre to share a full-time pastor beginning next year, July 1, 2018. That request will be formalized this fall at charge conference, but we probably will not know about possibilities for its success until next year.

What will this change mean for Centre? It will mean that I will reduce the amount of time I am scheduled to be in the office or otherwise “at work” for the congregation. For July, Sundays and Mondays will be my scheduled “work days.” If the SPRC and I agree that schedule is a good one, it will continue. Otherwise, we will experiment with a different schedule in August, which will be announced at the right time.

Here’s what will not change: I will still be present Sunday mornings for worship and at all meetings where my presence is necessary. I will still be available whenever you need pastoral care, for emergencies, and for visiting, regardless of the day of the week. I will still be leading the congregation as we grow in discipleship and mission in Forest Hill.

I believe that this is a change Centre needs, but I also believe that God has some exciting things in store for Centre. I hope that any money saved by this change will be used to connect with our local community in discipleship and mission outreach efforts. I hope that we will launch a new small group ministry this fall for all who come to Centre. And I hope that you will each take responsibility for Centre by your prayers, your presence, your gifts, your service, and your witness, so that in everything God may be glorified through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Below the signature I have placed a few questions that were asked yesterday, along with brief answers. If you have additional questions or concerns about this change, please do not hesitate to contact me right away.

Yours in Christ,

Pastor Mark

What will happen to the parsonage? The parsonage is not part of the direct pastoral expenses; for the next year there will be no change in how the parsonage is used.

How does this affect Pastor Mark and his family? This is basically a break-even change for my family. I will be covered under Libby’s health insurance at no additional cost. And Libby and I believe we would have spent roughly half of my salary for Christopher’s childcare over the next year. I will instead be the principle caregiver for Christopher.

Has there been discussion about growing the church? Yes! In fact, we have added new members every year since I arrived. I hope going part-time will concentrate our efforts on discipleship that results in real growth.

If something changed for the better, could we go back to full-time before next July? No. Changes in appointment usually happen in July, unless there is an emergency. If enough changed at Centre to support a return to full-time status, the SPRC and I would begin that conversation with our District Superintendent. The goal for Centre, however, should be growing closer to Jesus Christ in faithful discipleship and mission, not a particular appointment status.

Will Pastor Mark continue to be involved in the life of the congregation? Yes, of course! But I will not be able to do everything I have done in the past three years. The SPRC and I will talk regularly about using my time wisely for the sake of the church.
