A memorial service for Irene Osborne will be held this Saturday, October 17, at 5:00 p.m. at Centre.

The Food Pantry needs peanut butter, jelly, baked beans, oatmeal, tuna, and canned fruit.

On November 1 we will celebrate All Saints’ Sunday. During the service we will remember those in our church who have died in the last year. If you would also like to include the names of family, friends, neighbors, or co-workers who are not church members, please submit those names to Pastor Mark by October 29. You may call or email the church office, or you may put the names on a piece of paper and place it in the offering plate.

Thanksgiving is coming, and Centre will be offering baskets for our food pantry clients. You are invited to sponsor a basket by collecting items for a family of 1, 2, 4, or 6. A list of items for each size family will be available Sunday morning. Collect items on your own, or work together with someone else in the church on this important mission project.

Church council, which had been scheduled for 10/19, has been rescheduled for 10/26 at 7:00 p.m.
We are now collecting shoeboxes for Samaritan’s Purse. Judy Potts has placed empty boxes in the gathering area if you need them. Please consider filling at least 2 boxes, one for a boy and one for a girl. Instructions are also in the gathering space.

A member of our community has offered to purchase items for the food pantry using coupons. Please bring grocery coupon flyers from mailings and newspapers and drop them off in the food pantry box in the vestibule.

The Thursday lunch workgroup for October is canceled. We will resume meeting in November.

Longtime Centre member Irene Osborne passed away on Monday. Arrangements are still being made, but a service will be held at Centre and will be announced when details are known. Her family has asked the in lieu of flowers donations be made to Centre in memory of Irene.

Starting this Sunday, youth group will run from 5:30-7:30 p.m. For the month of October, we will meet at Centre. Because of the later start time, we are asking for help to make meals possible each week we’re at Centre. If you can make, or contribute to, a simple meal for about 20 youth, please let Pastor Mark or Nicky Barthel know.

Thank you to everyone who helped make the 150^th Anniversary Celebration a huge success!

Memorizing Scripture

In my sermon on September 13 I laid out a vision for Christian education at Centre. There are some things, I said, that every Christian who can know them should know them: the books of the Bible and their order; what the Old and New Testaments are; the Lord’s Prayer; the Apostles’ and Nicene Creeds; the Ten Commandments; and the two sacraments of the church, baptism and Eucharist.

I also challenged us as a congregation to begin memorizing Scripture together. So starting this month, and for the next year, I will name a passage of Scripture for us to memorize together. I want all of us who can to memorize that passage, or as much of it as we can.

If you’ve never memorized Scripture, this might seem a bit daunting. Here are a few tips: 1) Memorize with a partner (your spouse, a friend, or your children); 2) Practice every day; 3) Memorize one complete sentence at a time; 4) Memorize by speaking the words out loud; 5) Reading the text with some dramatic emphasis will also help.

In order to help the process a little, we will only memorize passages from the Psalms. The Psalms have images, rhythms, and poetry that make them easier to remember. They are also a key part of our worship service.

We will begin this month with Psalm 1. You may memorize using your favorite translation of the Bible, or you may use the translation I have provided below.

I won’t be quizzing you or anything like that, but I would love to hear from you if you managed to memorize some or all of Psalm 1 this month. Tell me by phone or email, or, better yet, recite it to me in person after worship one week! And don’t worry, I will be memorizing along with you.

The point of all this is not for us to show off how good we are at memorizing things. The point is to get to know Scripture better. Scripture should be a part of who we are and not just a book we read.

Announcements

Monthly Prayer: Please make Centre’s monthly prayer part of your daily devotional time. This month, you are asked to pray for the Finance team and Church Council as we prepare next year’s budget.

Youth Group will be at Centre for the month of October. We will also begin a new time, 5:30-7:30 p.m.

Youth who are would like to attend ROCK, February 5-7, should talk to Pastor Mark ASAP. ROCK is a United Methodist youth retreat in Ocean City.

Starting in October, we are hoping to provide more food for the weekly youth group meetings. Centre is hosting the youth group this month. If you would be able to provide a light supper (spaghetti, pizza, macaroni and cheese, etc.) for our youth in October, please contact Pastor Mark.

The Fellowship Lunch Workgroup will meet next on October 1. We will meet at 11:30am in the fellowship hall to enjoy meal and fellowship together. Following lunch we will work on small projects around the church. All are welcome! Please contact Sandy Barthel or Pastor Mark for more details.

Psalm 1: This month Pastor Mark is challenging us to memorize as much of Psalm 1 as we can. Here is the New Revised Standard Version translation:

Happy are those who do not follow the advice of the wicked, or take the path that sinners tread, or sit in the seat of scoffers; but their delight is the law of the Lord, and on his law they meditate day and night.

They are like trees planted by streams of water, which yield their fruit in its season, and their leaves do not wither. In all that they do they prosper.

The wicked are not so, but are like chaff that the wind drives away. Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous; for the Lord watches over the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked will perish.

The November Newsletter Deadline is October 22.
