Ways you can help those enduring Harvey’s devastation<!–

Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

Like me, I’m sure you have watched the rising floods in Texas with sadness and horror. Already, though, there are ways we, as United Methodists, can help. First, I want to ask each of you to pray for residents of affected areas tonight, before you go to bed. Continue to pray in the days to come. Consider praying the following:

Merciful God, you promise to shelter those battered by the storms of this world. Protect all whose lives are at risk because of rising floods. Strengthen all who work rescue those in danger. Comfort all who mourn. Restore every damaged community; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Second, UMCOR, the United Methodist Committee on Relief, has asked all United Methodists to provide assistance as we are able. You can donate funds by clicking here and donating online, or you can bring a check on Sunday marked “UMCOR Advance 901670” in the “For” line.

You can also create a Relief Kit. The simplest kit is a Health Kit. In a gallon-sized Ziploc bag place the following new items only: 1 Good quality hand towel; 1 wash cloth; 1 metal nail file or clipper; 1 bath size soap bar (still wrapped); 1 tooth brush (still wrapped); 6 regular-size band aids; and $1 for toothpaste (don’t put in toothpaste). Seal the bag, bring it to Centre this week, and I’ll make sure it gets to UMCOR. If you want to explore making other relief kits, click here.
