Announcements

As always be sure to check the online calendar for upcoming events. You can also read past sermons or watch videos from previous Sundays on our website.

There will be a Thanksgiving Eve service at Salem Lutheran Church in Jarrettsville on Wednesday, November 23 at 7:00 PM.  Pastor Mark is the preacher for the service, which joins Methodist, Lutheran, and Presbyterian churches.
 

Please remember the food pantry in your weekly grocery shopping trip. This week the pantry needs: cereal, baked beans, carrots, pancake mix, syrup,  canned fruit and jelly.

The Christmas tea is Saturday, December 3, starting at 1:00 p.m. Tickets are available after worship this Sunday morning from Kathy Johnson.

Portraits of Jesus is a 4-week Sunday School class taught by Pastor Mark in the Fellowship Hall. The class begins November 27. Each week will focus on how Jesus is depicted in one of the four gospels: Matthew (11/27), Mark (12/4), Luke (12/11), and John (12/18). This class is open to everyone: come for one week or for all four sessions.

Please remember the food pantry in your weekly grocery shopping trip. This week the pantry needs:cereal, peanut butter, pancake mix, tuna, and canned fruit.

Don’t forget that Samaritan’s Purse boxes will be packed this Saturday starting at 10:00 a.m. downstairs in the fellowship hall. Please come out and enjoy a time of fellowship while serving the poor around the world through this ministry.

The youth group will meet at 5:30 p.m. this Sunday at Centre.

Please sign up with another member of the congregation or with your family to provide a Thanksgiving basket to a family from our food pantry. Details are available in the Gathering Space after worship. Please sign up by November 6 and bring basket contents to the fellowship hall by November 13.

Voting and Christian Discipleship

The presidential election is almost upon us, and a number of factors have persuaded me to offer some general pastoral counseling for the whole congregation about the relationship between voting and our Christian discipleship. In this especially long and nasty election cycle, I hope you will consider the following carefully.

First, some things not to do:

-Don’t confuse “your candidate” (or candidates) with your Savior. Jesus is not on the ballot, and Jesus is no more interested in presiding over the United States than he was in ruling ancient Israel or Rome. No candidate is the source of our salvation.

-Don’t make the mistake of seeing your vote as a purely good act of discipleship. Each presidential candidate has promised to enact policies that will make some ways of loving our neighbors and enemies harder, not easier. We live in a fallen world, and the U.S. election choices reflect that. Repentance should be our first post-election act.

-Don’t cover for your candidates. If they say things that are contrary to the gospel, don’t pretend otherwise—especially if you end up voting for them.

Second, some things to do:

-Do take a Sabbath from social media (Facebook, Twitter, etc.) for at least a day or two before and after the election. A week before and after would be even better.

-Do find out how the candidates’ policies will really affect the poor and those who have, historically, been underrepresented in government decisions, in this country and also around the world. The Bible says God is on the side of these people, so you should be too.

-Do seek peace at all times. Ask yourself, “Is what I’m doing or thinking or saying building trust or undermining trust?” with those who might disagree with you. Commit to building or re-building relationships that have been damaged (that you damaged) by participating in the partisanship that has made this election so intolerable.

-“Do to others as you would have them do to you” (Luke 6:31).

*The December newsletter deadline is November 22.

*Youth group meets at Centre from 5:30-7:30 p.m. this month. No meeting on November 27.

*The sanctuary will be open publicly for prayer on election day, November 8 while polls are open.

*There will be a community Thanksgiving Eve worship service at 7:00 p.m. on November 23 at Salem Lutheran Church in Jarrettsville. Pastor Mark will be the preacher for this service.


Announcements

Each year Centre provides Thanksgiving baskets for clients of our food pantry. We ask that you provide a basket for a family of 2, 4, or 6 people by purchasing a list of items and a gift card. You are encouraged to provide a basket as a family or to join with other members of the congregation. Please sign up to sponsor a basket by November 6. Drop off baskets in the fellowship hall by November 13.

Advent begins the Sunday after Thanksgiving, November 27. On November 26, starting at 9:00 a.m., we will meet in the sanctuary to decorate for the season.

Pastor Mark will offer another short-term Sunday School class, Portraits of Jesus, for the four Sundays of Advent (November 27, December 4, December 11, and December 18). Each week we will study a different gospel portrait of Jesus: Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. All are invited to this class, which will meet in the basement fellowship hall.

The Christmas Tea is the afternoon of December 3. Tickets are available this month from Kathy Johnson.

All Saints’ Sunday is November 6. During the service we will remember those who have died in the last year. If you have friends, family, or co-workers you would like included in the service, please submit those names to the church office by November 3.

Turn back your clocks before you go to bed on November 5. Daylight savings time ends in the wee hours of November 6.

If you signed up to provide a meal for the youth group in November, thank you! If you don’t remember which Sunday is yours, please speak with Pastor Mark or Nicky Barthel.

Announcements

As always be sure to check the online calendar for upcoming events. You can also read past sermons or watch videos from previous Sundays on our website.
 

Please remember the food pantry in your weekly grocery shopping trip. This week the pantry needs:cereal, peanut butter, pancake mix, tuna, and canned fruit.

The youth group will meet at 5:30 p.m. this Sunday at Jarrettsville UMC.

Please bring filled financial contributions, items, and boxes for the Samaritan’s Purse ministry to Centre this Sunday, October 30.

Please sign up with another member of the congregation or with your family to provide a Thanksgiving basket to a family from our food pantry. Details are available in the Gathering Space after worship. Please sign up by November 6 and bring basket contents to the fellowship hall by November 13.

This week is the next in our Fifth Sundays Series. All are invited to gather in the sanctuary during the Sunday School hour to hear a presentation from a representative of Harford Family House. After Sunday School, we will have a potluck lunch in the fellowship hall.
