CentreNews Rev. Mark Gorman, Pastor
Connectional Worship
On the first Sunday of July we will gather with our United Methodist brothers and sisters at William Watters UMC for a community worship service. In the past, some of these churches meeting were involved in the Cooptown Reunion, which used to meet at the same place where we’ll worship.
I’m excited about our community worship service. As I’ve observed our church and our neighbor churches in Harford County the last two years, I have seen how resources of time and money and energy go into maintaining budgets and buildings instead of making disciples. I have seen how much we duplicate efforts, for maintenance and administration as well as for missional activities. And I have dreamed of ways for us to come together, so that we can share our burdens, so that we aren’t in competition with each other, and so that we can cooperate for the sake of the mission of God.
One worship service is just that. But God does amazing things when we join together in worship. And my hope is that some seed of cooperation, some small beginning of new ways of collaborating, might be planted on July 3. Not so that we can hold onto a pleasant past, but so we can be faithful as we look to the days to come. I have already seen some small fruit from this joint worship service, and I pray eagerly for what more God has for us.
United Methodists are a connectional people. We are not just a loose confederation of local congregations. The connections we have with other churches are a vital part of what it means for us to be Christ’s church. For about 75 years Methodists lived as if those connections didn’t matter, but as our society changes, we are beginning to see how essential they are.
That’s why I’m excited about July 3. That’s why I hope you will invite friends and neighbors to worship with us. That’s why I hope to see you at The Grove!
Yours in Christ,
Pastor Mark

Announcements
At its May meeting, the church council approved a new campaign to raise money for Sunday morning worship needs. We are hoping to raise $3000 for the following items:
1) A new projector for our onscreen presentations (Cost estimate=$2,000)
2) A set of pew bibles (Cost estimate=$600)
3) Worship and Song, a hymnal supplement (Cost estimate=$400)
This is an exciting project that we hope will have an immediate impact on our worship vitality. The new projector will allow us to project words more clearly and visibly as well as incorporate images and video in more satisfying ways for Sunday School. The pew bibles will allow us to foster biblical literacy in worship. And Worship and Song will give us new and familiar hymns and songs in an accessible format. Please consider giving to this campaign. You may write a check with “Sunday morning worship needs” in the “For” line, or you may give specifically for one of the three items by writing either “Projector,” “Pew bibles,” or “Worship and Song” in the “For” line.
Caritas, a new small group for young adults, will meet Thursdays this summer in the evening from 7:00-8:15. The focus of the group is “growing in love for God and neighbor.” Dates are July 7, 14, 21, 28, and August 4. All young adults from 18-30 are invited. The first meeting will be at Fox & Fern on Rocks Spring Road in Forest Hill.
The youth group will meet on Sunday, July 17, at Centre from 5:30-7:00 p.m.
There is no Fellowship Lunch Workgroup this month.
On July 3 Centre will join six other United Methodist congregations at the Grove at William Watters UMC on Jarrettsville Road for a Community Worship Service. You don’t want to miss this service! Worship starts at 10:00 a.m. and is followed by a potluck picnic. Please bring a side dish or salad to share.
Directory Update: Beth and Gabe Montemurro, Alison and Caleb, 705 Pheasant Drive, Forest Hill, MD 21050.
There will be no Fifth Sundays events in July. Our outdoor worship service and church picnic is August 28 at Friends Park; mark your calendars now!
Centre’s Finances
Changes in Reporting: This year we are only reporting undirected giving, rather than total giving. While Centre is grateful for and needs all offerings that come in, in most cases only undirected giving may be used for the day-to-day expenses of the congregation. Directed giving allows our church to pursue special projects or fund one-time expenses. Undirected giving pays the light bill and gets the bathrooms cleaned.
Also, the totals show receipts, the budget, and the amount ahead/behind up to the week when the newsletter is published. Through June 19, therefore, Centre’s giving is $3,173.48 less than what has been budgeted for the same time.
If you have questions about financial stewardship at Centre or about Centre’s budget, please speak to John Griffin, Finance Chair, or to Pastor Mark.
Total Collected Through June 19: $64,332.76
Total Needed Through May 22: $67,506.24
Ahead/(Behind): ($3,173.48)
