General Conference 2016
Six months from now, starting May 10, the General Conference of The United Methodist Church will begin meeting in Portland, Oregon. General Conference meets every four years, and delegates from all over the world will gather in Portland to worship Christ, to celebrate the gifts of The United Methodist Church, and to make decisions about our denomination.
It is sometimes easy to get lost in the bureaucratic language of a denomination, and General Conference can feel like a very distant affair. But I want to challenge you to pay attention to General Conference 2016, to pray for the delegates, and to take the time to understand what is going on.
Why? First, because General Conference speaks in our name. In fact, only General Conference speaks in our name. A bishop may state her opinion; a pastor may organize support for a particular action. But when the General Conference makes a decision, that position is the United Methodist position.
Second, because many of the decisions made by General Conference can affect life as the church at Centre. Who can be your pastor? How do we worship? What holds us together with other United Methodists, in Harford County or Maryland or the U.S. or over the whole world? The General Conference will be considering matters that address these questions.
Third, because as United Methodists we believe that the church is “the community of all true believers under the Lordship of Christ” (Confession of Faith, Article V). The church is not just about what happens at Centre, or the people we like, or the other Christians we know. So whenever the church gathers, it is always our concern.
Pay attention to the decisions of General Conference. Take ownership in your church, in your denomination. And for the sake of the church, pray for General Conference.

Announcements
Monthly Prayer: Please make Centre’s monthly prayer part of your daily devotional time. This month, you are asked to pray for the Trustees as they continue to seek wise decisions for the major projects that need attention.
Youth Group will be at Jarrettsville UMC for the month of November, 5:30-7:30.
Centre is providing Thanksgiving baskets for as many of our Food Pantry clients as possible. Please sign up by November 8 to provide a basket for a family of 1, 2, 4, or 6. You may provide a basket on your own or join with other members of the church. There is a list of recommended items for each family size. Please help make someone’s holidays a little brighter this year.
We need Communion servers for the month of November. Please let Nancy Martin know if you are available to serve one or more Sundays this month. Can’t serve in November? We will need servers for December, too. One of the great joys at Centre is serving each other Communion every week. Share in that joy by offering to serve!
This month we are collecting shoeboxes for Samaritan’s Purse. Please return filled shoeboxes to Centre by November 8.
The Fellowship Lunch Workgroup will meet next on November 12. We will meet at 11:30am in the fellowship hall to enjoy meal and fellowship together. Following lunch we will work on small projects around the church. All are welcome! Please contact Sandy Barthel or Pastor Mark for more details.
Psalm 23: This month Pastor Mark is challenging us to memorize as much of Psalm 23 as we can. Many of us know Psalm 23 in the King James Version, but here is the New Revised Standard Version translation:
The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures; he leads me beside still waters; he restores my soul. He leads me in right paths for his name’s sake. Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I fear no evil; for you are with me; your rod and your staff— they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord my whole life long.
