Anniversaries
This month marks the one-year anniversary of my appointment as your pastor at Centre. The last year has gone by quickly, and I am excited by the ways we have gotten to know each other these past twelve months. I am also looking forward to the challenges of Christian discipleship that await us in the year to come.
Another anniversary is at our doorstep. This year we begin our celebration of Centre’s 150^th year of worship and service in Forest Hill. We will kick off our commemorations the weekend of September 26-27. On Saturday, September 26 we will host an afternoon open house and fun day, with activities, and food for children and adults. Then, on Sunday, we will gather for worship at 10:00 a.m. (note the different time!) for a special service of celebration and thanksgiving. Rev. Dr. Laura Easto, our district superintendent, will be our guest preacher that morning. The service will be followed by a community meal.
Now is the time to mark your calendars, invite your friends, family, and neighbors, and let people know about this exciting weekend. We also need people to serve both days as greeters, ushers, communion servers, activity and games coordinators, clean-up crew, and more. We need every member to take an active role in making this weekend a success.
Anniversaries are a great time to reflect on our past and consider God’s vision and mission for our future. We have already been involved in that process through the congregational study and various discussions at the leadership retreat, in church council, and in the lay leadership development and staff parish relations committees.
But right now I want to challenge each of you personally. How can you increase your faithfulness to Christ’s call to discipleship? Are you participating in a small group? Do you pray for the church regularly? Do you give sacrificially of your time, talents, gifts, service, and financial resources? Do you share your excitement and love for Centre with your neighbors, your children, your friends, and your coworkers?
Commit now to growing closer to Christ and his church through these discipleship opportunities! You and Centre will be nourished by the fruit they bear for many more years to come.

In Brief…
*Pastor Mark is out of town from the afternoon of July 5-July 16.
*Mark your calendars now: Charge Conference is September 15 at 7:00 p.m. at Emory UMC in Street, MD.
*Youth group will not meet on Sundays July-August. The next youth group event will be a morning trip to Manna House in Baltimore, Thursday, July 30.

Announcements
Monthly Prayer: Please make Centre’s monthly prayer part of your daily devotional time. This month, you are asked to pray for the 150^th Anniversary Committee as they finalize plans for September 26-27 and for the year of celebration and events to follow.
The youth group will be traveling to Manna House, a charity in Baltimore that serves a daily morning soup kitchen throughout the year. Youth, chaperones, and parents will meet at the church at 6:45 a.m. to travel to Baltimore and serve in the Soup Kitchen, which is open from 8:00-10:15 a.m. Youth of all ages and their parents are encouraged to participate.
Our food pantry supplies are dwindling. Please make a habit of buying one or two small items every week to bring for the pantry; that provides a reliable basis for us to continue operating. Canned tuna, soups, fruits, and vegetables as well as other nonperishable items like pasta, cereal, and boxed mashed potatoes are always needed.
The Fellowship Lunch Workgroup will meet next on August 4. We will meet at 11:30 in the fellowship hall to enjoy meal and fellowship together. Following lunch we will work on small projects around the church. All are welcome! Please contact Sandy Barthel or Pastor Mark for more details.
Pastor Mark will be away from the afternoon of July 5-July 16. Please welcome back Rev. Dr. Paul Benjamin, who will preach and preside at Holy Communion on Sunday, July 12.
If you have a youth in middle or high school who has not yet been confirmed, please contact Pastor Mark by August 1 about confirmation class for 2015-2016.
The July Newsletter Deadline is July 23.
