Mark Gorman, Pastor Paternity Leave When Libby and I found out that our family would welcome Christopher Douglas late last year, we started examining our options for childcare and leave. The United Methodist Book of Discipline, our church’s guide for doctrine and administration, allows pastors to take up to thirteen weeks of leave after the birth or adoption of a child. That allowance fit perfectly with our family’s need, which is to make it through this school year without major childcare expenses. My leave begins March 13, 2017. My paternity leave means many things for Centre, most of which I will have discussed at our congregational meeting on January 29, before you receive this email. There will be consistency in preaching (Rev. Paul Benjamin will be here for 8 weeks, and I will preach the last 5 weeks of my leave), and there will be coverage for urgent pastoral care needs (a list of providers was distributed at the meeting on January 29 and is also in this newsletter). For much of the rest of what I do, this is a chance for Centre’s members to take on a more active role in the running of the church. Checking on buildings, visiting members, collecting the mail, cleaning up the sanctuary after worship services, inviting people to church, telling people about events: you can get involved, even if it’s only doing something once or twice during the thirteen weeks I’m gone. Whether you have signed up for something yet or not, I invite you to consider how you can help make this period sail as smoothly as possible. The church is not the pastor any more than it is the building. The church is the members of the body of Christ: that’s you! I am looking forward to the time I get to spend with Christopher this spring. Between now and then, I will be working hard to make sure Centre is also cared for; I hope you will join me in that effort. I am grateful for the opportunity to serve as your pastor. In Brief… *The March newsletter deadline is February 23. There will be no newsletter in April, May, or June. *Youth group meets at Jarrettsville this month. No meeting on February 5, which is the day youth return from ROCK. On February 26 we will serve dinner for the Homeless Shelter. *Before Pastor Mark goes on leave we would like to update the directory. If you have any changes to your contact information, please call or email the church by February 15. *Centre will host the Emergency Rotating Homeless Shelter from February 13-February 27. Please welcome our guests and those who serve them with generous hospitality during these two busy weeks. *Mark your calendars now for March 5, the first Sunday in Lent, when we will have our next Community Worship Service. The service will take place at Centre. Announcements Emergency Rotating Homeless Shelter: Centre’s turn to host the shelter is just around the corner: February 20-27. This is a congregation-wide effort. We will have a potluck lunch on Sunday, February 26, with our guests. We also need volunteers for overnight shifts throughout the week. If you cannot help on-site, please pray daily for this effort and encourage others to participate according to their gifts and abilities. Please also be aware that our buildings will be used to host guests for the shelter from February 13-27, although Centre is only responsible for providing volunteers during the original dates of February 20-27. Volunteer training is February 11 at 10:00 a.m. If you are spending a significant time working in the shelter, please plan to attend that training. The next meeting for the Emergency Rotating Homeless Shelter will be Wednesday, February 1, at 7:00 p.m. Winter Cleanup Day: At 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 18, we will gather at the church for an interior cleanup day. This is the midpoint of hosting the shelter, so we will give rooms in both buildings a good clean to get us started on the second week with everything feeling and looking great. With flu season now in full swing, please make sure you are taking precautions if you are sick or if your immune system is weakened. If you have not yet gotten a flu shot, please consider doing so, if your physician says you are healthy enough to do so. Christmas Eve Offering: On Christmas Eve we collected $662 for the Welcome One Shelter in Edgewood. Thank you for your generous support of this vital ministry! Year-End Finances for 2016: 2016 was a very good year financially for Centre. Our operating expenses, which pay for everything from the electricity to the pastor’s salary to mission endeavors, came to $134,372.35, and our offering for these expenses was $133,362.85. That means we collected a little less ($1,009.50) than our operating expenses. But our total giving for the year was $147,684.35, compared to total spending of $146,037.93, leaving us with a small overall surplus ($1,646.42). Thank you for your support of the work of the body of Christ at Centre this year! Lent and Easter 2017 at Centre Each year at Centre we add events or classes to our calendar to focus our attention on Christ’s Passion, Death, and Resurrection. This year we are expanding our practice of Lent by working with nine other churches from North Harford County. Please mark your calendars now and plan to participate in these events: Ash Wednesday (March 1): Light supper at 6:00 p.m. followed by worship service at 7:00 p.m., at Salem Lutheran Church, Jarrettsville. “Holy Water”: A weekly gathering at Bethel Presbyterian Church, 4135 Norrisville Road, White Hall. On Wednesdays in Lent we will meet at 6:00 p.m. for a light supper, followed by a brief service of Scripture, prayer, and hymns at 6:45 p.m. Each week a different pastor will  speak on a biblical passage in which water plays a major role. We will meet March 8, 15, 22, 29, and April 5. Pastor Mark will speak on April 5. Holy Week: We will have worship services at 7:00 p.m on Maundy Thursday, April 13; and Noon and 7:00 p.m. on Good Friday, April 14. Easter: 6:30 a.m. (at Rocks State Park) and 9:30 a.m. (at Centre) on Easter Sunday, April 16.
