The Cross of Christ

The cross of Jesus Christ is more than a token of Christ’s love for us. It’s more than a sign of an event that happened two thousand years ago. It’s more than a symbol for Christians all around the world. The cross is a calling, a vocation, for all Christians. Christ died for us on the cross, so that, every day, we can die to our sinful selves and live in the fullness of life Christ offers.

Jesus says, “Whoever would be my disciple must take up the cross and follow me.” We want to follow Jesus on our terms; Jesus insists that we follow him by the way of the cross. Paul, in Galatians, says the he has been co-crucified with Christ. Paul challenges us to ask if we, too, have been crucified with Christ.

If all that sounds like pious nonsense, our recent gospel readings from Luke have reminded us that it is not. Caring for the poor, giving up our wealth, abandoning our thirst for status: all of these are steps on the path to the cross. They have a real cost, which is why we wrestle with Jesus’s hard sayings on these matters. Which is why we’re afraid to take Jesus at his word.

In our worship services, we follow a lectionary, or list of readings from the Bible. Each year, the lectionary has us journey to the cross twice. The first time starts on Ash Wednesday and ends at Good Friday. This is the journey to the cross everyone knows. This is the journey of walking alongside Jesus himself as he travels from Galilee to Jerusalem.

The second time begins in the summer and ends on November 20th, the Sunday before Advent. This journey does not retrace Jesus’s steps to the cross. Instead, it is our journey of discipleship. The second journey reminds us that the way of the cross is not just something Jesus walked for himself. The second journey tells us that each teaching, every word from Jesus, directs us to the cross.

What parts of your life is Jesus calling you to take to the cross this year? What lingering hatred, fear, resentment, or prejudice do you need to put to death? What possession, dream, or desire is holding you back from following him all the way to the cross? How does Jesus offer to transform your discipleship in the way of the cross?

Yours in Christ,

Pastor Mark

In Brief…

*The November newsletter deadline is October 27.

*Youth group meets at Jarrettsville UMC from 5:30-7:30 p.m. this month.

*Our next Community Worship Service is October 2 at 10:00 a.m. at the Grove at William Watters UMC. A potluck lunch will follow.

Announcements

On October 2 Centre will join other United Methodist congregations at the Grove at William Watters UMC on Jarrettsville Road for a Community Worship Service. You don’t want to miss this service! When we gathered in July, 176 people from across Harford County worshiped together at the Grove! Worship starts at 10:00 a.m. and is followed by a potluck picnic. A special offering will be taken for the rotating emergency shelter this winter. Please plan to give your regular Sunday offering for October 2 on September 25 or October 9.

The Church Council has decided to sponsor a week-long shelter for homeless men and women February 20-27, 2017. We need contributions from everyone in the church to make this shelter a success. Nancy Martin and John Griffin will coordinate this effort. Please talk with them about ways you can assist.

This month we will be collecting shoeboxes of items for Samaritan’s Purse’s Operation Christmas Child. A list of items to collect will be available in the Gathering Space after worship. Please bring filled boxes back to Centre by October 30. Also, Centre will host a regional meeting about the shoeboxes on Saturday, October 1, from 9:30-11:30 a.m. in the Community Building. All are invited to attend this meeting and find out more about the ministry. If you have questions, please speak with Judy Potts.

Each year Centre provides Thanksgiving baskets for clients of our food pantry. We ask that you provide a basket for a family of 2, 4, or 6 people by purchasing a list of items and a gift card. You are encouraged to provide a basket as a family or to join with other members of the congregation. Details about what items to purchase will be available later in October. Please sign up to sponsor a basket by November 6.

October 30th is the next in our Fifth Sundays Series. All adults and youth are invited to gather in the sanctuary during the Sunday School hour to hear a presentation from a representative of Harford Family House. After Sunday School, we will have a potluck lunch in the fellowship hall.

The last Vision Prayer Group meeting will be October 9 at noon. If you have been involved in this prayer group this year, please plan to come for a time of prayer together for our congregation.

The youth group needs meals for the Sundays of November. If you would be willing to provide a simple meal for our youth group, please speak with Pastor Mark or Nicky Barthel.
